'It's like they never miss a pass': The Swans' Galbraith renews contest with City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he reminisces about the thrilling dying seconds of his team's remarkable turnaround win against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. The game ended with Galbraith picking up a fan's glasses following the on-field celebration.

During the final moments of stoppage time, Galbraith struck the post with a speculative strike from outside the box, and Cameron Burgess quickly converted the deflection before racing off toward the East Stand to revel in the moment, with the crowd congregating around the players.

Stunning Reversal

The victory completed an incredible comeback given Swansea had been behind 2-0 during the second half. During the celebrations, there was some collateral damage. The midfielder recalled, "There was a spectator shouting out and we were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we spotted the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as players but we're individuals, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

That win secured a fourth-round game at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a team Galbraith pushed hard at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with his former club in February. Galbraith had an excellent perspective when Orient took the lead in stunning style, with Jamie Donley's long-range effort from about way out going in via the bar and the Stefan Ortega. It seems unfair that it was deemed an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've credited him for having a go from that distance," commented Galbraith, who started in midfield before moving to right defensive wing after Orient changed tactics. That meant competing with City's winger, with whom he exchanged jerseys, and the attacker was among the Manchester squad who paid tribute to the way his former team played positively.

City's Quality

"Fitness-wise they are very good but even the simple things and basic skills, they can just perform consistently," Galbraith says. "It appears that they never miss a pass and they know how to control and neutralize a game. You can believe you're doing well and then without warning they will just thread a ball through a line without you even noticing. You have to be switched on every second of the game. It takes a resilient mindset and concentration just to keep pace."

New Chapter

The club pushed to sign Galbraith in January and beat off competition to bring him in in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He established himself as a crowd pleaser across two seasons at Leyton Orient and has rapidly replicated that in south Wales. At the London club he reunited with the coach, who previously gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in professional games on loan at a League One side from Old Trafford. Then came a temporary move at fourth-tier Salford City, before he permanently left his boyhood club.

Growth Journey

"I was likely a somewhat inexperienced going into senior level. I think many athletes would say development squad matches is very different. Sometimes it seems the ball is moved without much intensity. There's not many hard challenges. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adjust fast."

Country Call-ups

He has shown that growth for club and country, performing well for Northern Ireland, who remain in contention for the World Cup next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has featured in the recent fixtures, including both legs games against the German national team. The ex-coach, Galbraith's previous international manager, gave him the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he manipulates the ball and his ability to spot a game-changing assist.

Starting Out

It has been an incredible journey for the player from the Queens Park estate in his hometown, just outside Northern Ireland's main city, who grew up watching his parent, Stuart, also a engine room operator, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Red Devils Debut

His single match for United came in the away trip in 2019, a European competition trip to Astana, where they competed on an plastic turf and the arena covering was sealed owing to conditions of bitter cold. "It was a long trip and it was cold out there," he comments, chuckling. "The week before, myself and quite a few of the young lads practiced as a group, so that helped us acclimatise. Just to travel with the first team and make an appearance at the end was unbelievable."

Leaving United

What was the challenge was it to leave United, the club he transferred from aged 16? "It was quite easy, because I arrived at the moment where I understood I couldn't establish myself at the top level. I'm very appreciative for the time I spent there but it got to the point where I believed I had to take a different path, join a smaller club and play professional soccer. Now I'm slowly progressing again."

New Environment

This occurs during mid-afternoon at the club's training ground but Galbraith has a commitment at 5pm: a learner's exam, another step towards getting on the road. Prior to relocating to Sketty, the young professional was a constant rider in Swansea's so-called player transport, a team vehicle driven by club employees, Pete and Howard, which ferries players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"It's myself a teammate, another squad member, the midfielder – Melker Widell used to be in it but has got his license. It's nice to spend time with the teammates but I'm planning to be the subsequent individual to stop using the bus and behind the wheel. The Portuguese player is known for his humor; he's frequently playing tricks."

Public Engagement

During his time at Leyton Orient, Galbraith would travel alongside supporters on the Tube after beginning his trip at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
