EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
